Westmore Elementary School

Blog Entry #1

I have applied to shadow a Kindergarten and/or 5th grade teacher at Westmore Elementary School. A school in Alpine School district. From what I have read online, and seen surrounding the school, it is a very diverse school. When I visited the school to talk to the administration I noticed there were not many cars in the parking lot. So my first observation was that this must not be a very large school. I found online that there are only 419 students. Which makes 16 students per 1 teacher.
From the surrounding neighborhood, I noticed that the houses were either middle class, both high and low. But the area feels very rural.

I have not yet been placed in my service learning class. But from what I have read and heard, I am excited for the diversity of this school and getting to see how the teacher teaches such a diverse classroom. This past year I took a class called Teaching as a Profession where I was able to learn about being a teacher. During this class, I had the opportunity to shadow a teacher every two weeks. I did this service learning for a year, and absolutely loved it. It made my drive for wanting to be a teacher stronger. And I now have much more respect for teachers than I did before. I am also excited to take what I am learning in my Intro to Education course and not only connect it to how the teachers I am observing do it. But learn how to do those things I am learning in my own future classroom.
